Problems related to the proper functioning of doors and windows

In most parts of India, there are at least four distinct seasons which leads to various kinds of issues regarding the proper functioning of doors and windows. These could range from refusing to open, sticking, or needing a great deal of effort to open and close, especially during the monsoon. Many times, both doors and windows tend to creak a fair bit when opened or closed, which can grate on a person’s nerves.

On the other hand, Bathroom doors face the common problem of bloating, especially in a smaller bathroom space where water keeps getting splashed on the door. Last but not least, the alignment of the door or window shifts due to expansion or contraction, which then makes it challenging to secure appropriately, needing the owner to exert a fair bit of force to line up the fastener in the correct slot, often leaving a gap which allows for a cold winter breeze or rain to seep in.

So how do we overcome these problems?

While the issues mentioned are real problems, there are solutions in different types of doors and wooden window frames to match all kinds of budgetary requirements. The price of solutions largely depends on the price and type of wood used to make the doors and wooden window frames. Many thought schools have teak wood as the leading choice to make the best quality doors and window frames.

However, there are many who, on the other hand, recommend and prefer using Deodar wood as it more cost-effective while being lighter. A common misconception is that because Deodar is lighter than Teak, it is not strong enough, which is not true because the tensile strength of Deodar matches or is possibly even higher than Teak wood. Other hardwood choices for making doors and window frames are Sal, Oak, Pine, Cedar, etc.

The wood used to build door frames has to be cured and seasoned correctly. Seasoning or curing is done to ensure that the door frame can bear the weight of the door’s structure, support all sorts of grooves for hinges, locks, etc., and can withstand extreme weather conditions while still staying strong. Due to the ability of wood to expand due to the absorption of water moisture, a smidgen of a gap is left between the floor and the base of the door frame to allow for natural expansion of the wood.

Should the wood not be seasoned or cured, the expansion that occurs will be more significant than expected due to the resultant pressure exerted on the frame of either a door or a window getting greater and greater, causing the structure to bend. This will lead to a change or an unwanted correction in the door or window’s overall alignment.

The creaking noise heard on the opening and closing of doors is a clear sign of the disturbance in the alignment, most common during India’s rainy seasons. These creaking noises are often caused by faulty hinges when the actual cause is the bending of the frame or the loosening of the screws fastening the hinge to the frame loosens due to the defective structure.

Identify the cured wood.

Wood that has been seasoned from reputed wood suppliers like Faith Lumber most often has a shimmer to it, has a silky feel (due to the oil used to strengthen the wood), and a darker shade. Irrespective of what hardwood is chosen to build the doors and window frames, expert advice from Faith Lumber will help customers make the best and most informed decision before determining what their preferred choice of wood will be.
